Ever seen your Gin & Tonic glow? Or gore gleam on a crime show? That is fluorescence, the emission of visible light when something is illuminated with Ultra Violet light. Remember the stars in cereal packets as children, that twinkled on your ceiling after lights out? That is phosphorescence, the emission of visible light after the UV light has been turned off.

Did you know you know that lots of gemstones display characteristic glowing features and colours under long wave and short wave light, and we can use this to help separate and identify them, and even some synthetic gems and treatments?

Join Shirley Mitchell; Valuer and Glowing Gemmologist Extraordinaire, and me, Kerry Gregory; Head of Shiny Stuff at Gemmology Rocks and for an afternoon of exploration of glowing gems. Gemstones, UV lights, safety goggles (one must look a little silly and like a proper scientist) will be all be provided (you will need to provide your own lab coats if you want to really look the part – it is not necessary!).

As well as witty banter, excellent education, amazing French Patisseries, decent tea and coffee and even a G&T to check the glow should you so desire, all part of your ticket cost.

These afternoons, are informal, fun, educational and a brilliant way to meet new people in the industry.
