Gemmology Rocks - Gemmological Business Manager Position

 

It’s with sadness that we need to find someone to take on Tori’s role, of being Kerry’s biggest supporter. No one will replace her, it’s not possible, and we are thrilled that she is taking the leap to move on with her next big adventure. It is an opportunity for us to evolve and change, and whomever comes in to make the role their own in the way Tori has. 

We’re a small entrepreneurial company, and we are looking for someone who can wear multiple hats, to support Owner and Founder Kerry in managing, developing and growing the business. Like Kerry we need someone who has experience in many different facets (pun intended) of the industry, who can contribute ideas, and can work without having to be micro managed. 

This role requires a candidate who has great work ethic, has the ability to problem solve, can manage themselves and a varied and challenging workload, as well as a small team, and someone who takes initiative without overstepping the mark. 

Customer experience is all important to us and is at the forefront of everything we do, we work with customers from many different parts of the jewellery, pawnbroking and auction industries as well as private clients, so you must be able to work well with all types of people and be able to adapt to how to they want to communicate. 

Candidates should have a strong entrepreneurial spirit, desire to work in a socially responsible business, and a genuine love and interest in gems and gemmological education.  It is what drives us and we are looking for a candidate that shares that joy. 

We know everything seems to be remote these days, but we work with a physical product so candidates must be able to work at our office in Maidstone, Kent. We also travel, and we’d like you to come along! The ability to travel for work is necessary as we travel all over the UK to teach our courses. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

       Effectively manage yourself, your workload, projects and a small team

       Screen, sort and identify loose diamonds and colored gemstones commercially, in an efficient and accurate manner

       Appraise, value and price coloured gemstones and diamonds for wholesale

       Manage inventory;  from identifying, creating, pricing, photographing, as well as stock taking, order picking and getting stock ready for trade shows

       Administrate a business including creating appro notes & invoices, shipping etc.

       Create content for Facebook, Instagram, and marketing emails

       Assist in planning and executing client events

Essential Skills:

If you have qualifications, great, but you do not need them, you need to be able to do the job. If you have the paper but can’t do the job that won’t work for us!

       Competent and efficient at identifying diamonds, including treatments and synthetics

       Required accuracy *99%+

       Required speed 30+ an hour

       Competent and efficient at grading and pricing diamonds in the wholesale market.

       Required speed 30+ an hour

       Competent and efficient at identifying gemstones

       Common and commercial: Required accuracy *99%+, Required speed 100+ an hour

       Unusual and uncommon: Required accuracy *99%+, Required speed 30+ an hour

       Rare and complex: Required accuracy *99%+

       Competent and efficient at grading and pricing coloured stones in the wholesale market.

       Required speed 30+ an hour

       Previous gem trading and commercial gemmological experience is required.

*accuracy is based on gems that are able to be identified using standard gem ID equipment, and advanced gemmology skills, not anything needing advanced laboratory testing.

 

Desirable Qualifications:

       Gemmological and diamond diploma from Gem-A

or

       Graduate Gemologist diploma from GIA

       Teaching qualification. Ideally specialising in adult education

£30,000-£36,000 PA dependent on skill and experience level
