Wouldn't it be great to be able to tell whether that colourless stone your customer hands you is a diamond just by looking at it with a loupe?

That is what you'll achieve in this one day class. Thursday 30th April 2026, 09:30 to 16:30 in the heart of Glasgow.

This class is designed with working jewellers, goldsmiths, designers, auctioneers and pawnbrokers in mind.

A very hands-on class, you'll be led through how to look at gemstones to get the information you need to make a decision. What features to look for, and how to use them to separate Diamond from common simulants. We focus on CZ and Moissanite in the class because these are the most common on the market, and if you can tell the difference between them, you will be able to separate any other diamond simulant on the market using the same process and features.

Key Objectives:

  • Separate Diamond from CZ, moissanite and all common imitations using just a loupe and your eyes.
  • Be able to explain the impact of colour and clarity to your customer, in terms of look and price.

Previous knowledge needed:

There is no previous knowledge needed for this class. You just need to be able to speak English fluently, and see. It is beneficial if you already have some experience handling, and observing diamonds, their imitations and other gemstones, but not necessary. We will give you all the training and skills you need to do this from a basic level.

What you can learn next:

Once you are confident in handling, observing and separating diamonds from imitations (things that look like diamond but are not the same chemistry or structure eg CZ, Moissanite, and other imitations) you can go on to study further.

  • Learn how to assess diamonds for commercial purposes. Appraise the 4 c's of colour, clarity, cut and carat, to give yourself and customers more confidence, and help you buy and sell diamonds better.
  • Use multi stage techniques and some advanced equipment, to screen and identify diamond from synthetic diamond.

What you get:

  • 6 hours in person tuition, and hands on exercises
  • Use of all the equipment you might need
  • Hundreds of stones to work with
  • Refreshments provided throughout the day
  • Lunch
  • A fabulous one day experience
